Good luck @ the Mundials!

Just a quick note. I know I haven't been around much lately to help my teammates that are going to the Mundials, but you are all in my thoughts. You are an amazing group of people, with a great work ethic, who have been taught by the best. I have no doubt in your abilities. Go for broke!

It is with much sadness that I am not joining you on this journey. Part of me wishes I was going just to watch, take photos and hang out with everyone. Nonetheless, I'll be thinking of you. Best of luck to everyone on Relson Gracie's team, all that BJJ ladies of Texas and everyone I know that is competing! I look forward to hearing about your experiences and I will be with you "in spirit"!

Next stop Rio de Janeiro..

For as long as I can remember it has been a dream of mine to go to Brazil, the birth place of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I had been looking for opportunities over the years but nothing came together before. It has been a long time since my team has gone to Brazil. I think the last time was when I was a white belt. Back then I didn't really have the funds to go and Jiu-Jitsu really wasn't as big of a passion of mine as it is now . I was rather too green in Jiu-Jitsu and probably wouldn't have gotten the most out of the experience anyway.

Then earlier this year I found out about Kyra Gracie's Jiu-Jitsu camp. I was excited about the opportunity to go to Rio and train with Kyra. I was all set to go but the inevitability of life got in the way of my plans. Being a full time student and business owner I just couldn't justify traveling to Brazil at that time. I was horribly disappointed, but in the end I came to the realize it just wasn't meant to be.

Finally, about a month ago I got word that Leticia Ribeiro was going to have a Jiu-Jitsu camp in July. My friend Donald has been telling me forever that I need to go and train with Leticia. He said she is an amazing athlete and teacher.

I can't tell you how hungry I've been to go on an adventure. I just finished up school and I don't have any work constraints that will prevent me from going. I have nothing holding me back and the timing couldn't be more perfect. The more I've matured in life, the more I've come to realize that you can't force things to happen. When it is meant to be, it just works.

So I am Brazil bound! Words can not describe how excited I am. The idea of competing in the Rio Open, learning from Leticia and being apart of this camp is the fulfillment of a long term dream. I am so very grateful to have this opportunity. This will be my first time traveling internationally by myself and competing without my coach or teammates. I am looking forward to the experiences that are to come.

If you are interested in embarking on this journey with me, they still have slots open. More information can be found at:

Girls in Gis

This past weekend Lana and I took a road trip to Dallas/Richardson to train with the women of Girls in Gi's. Girls in Gi's is a community of girls and women who train Brazilian jiu-jitsu and provide a fun, friendly environment for training.

Lana and I were hungry for a mini adventure and our friend Georgette strongly recommended that we go to the Girls in Gi's training day. Richardson is about 3.5 hrs from Austin, give or take a little bit depending on how fast you drive. However, the trip went rather fast since we gabbed the whole way. Lana and I are are both getting ready for the Mundials in June. We were excited about the prospect of training with more women.

All the women of Girls in Gi's were super friendly and made us feel right at home. We went over a few techniques and then it was open mat. It was nice to be among other women who share the same passion as I do. It has been a long time since I've been around that many women on the mats all at once. Some how Lana and I ended up rolling together for most of the open mat time. Which is some what funny seeing as we drove together, but we don't train together on a regular basis.

I had a great time meeting everyone at Girls in Gi's. I strongly encourage women in the state of Texas to come on out and train with this organization. The next training is going to be in San Antonio. Keep an eye out for the info. Big thanks to the women who organized this event. See y'all soon!
